World of Wipes conference illustrates industry’s heightened focus on flushability issue

CLOVERDALE, CA, July 2, 2015-

Probably no subject came up more often among the presentations at last month's World of Wipes conference in Atlanta than flushability, and the general view that was presented seemed to be that addressing the issue requires making progress on the technologies used to produce wipes, labeling of wipes packages, and educating the public about what should go down the toilet - and what should not.

Dave Rousse, president of conference organizer INDA, set the tone for the discussion with his presentation on "Flushability: The Many Moving Pieces and How They Fit Together". He addressed the recent claims in the media that flushable wipes cause problems in wastewater systems in North America and elsewhere, by pointing out that wipes actually categorized as flushable only represented 7% of North America's 350,500 tonnes of wipes substrate demand in 2014. The flushable category includes product entries from the moist toilet tissue, toddler training and intimate/feminine care sectors.
