Evonik idles 40,000 tonnes of SAP capacity due to demand levels; plans to upgrade unit to ‘state of the art’

CLOVERDALE, CA, September 12, 2016-

Superabsorbent polymer producer Evonik will idle capacity at a site in North Carolina, reducing potential production by 40,000 tonnes in response to current demand trends, the German company said. Over the next year or two it will modernize the affected equipment and then restart it, according to the announcement.

Market observers have described world SAP supply as being greatly in excess of current levels of demand. They have also said that Evonik has been less vocal than competitors such as BASF, Nippon Shokubai and Sumitomo Seika at promoting new technologies in the last couple of years. BASF, for example, has made a big splash in the market with its Saviva brand of polymer made with what it calls the droplet polymerization process.
