Bico, fine-denier PSF imports hit by antidumping duties in US have declined while other fiber imports rise

CLOVERDALE, CA, January 17, 2019-

Just as most observers expected, US imports of polyester staple fibers have been hard hit by a combination of stiff antidumping duties on some companies and countries plus the Trump Administration’s imposition of an extra 10% tariff on many products coming from China. US import data for the first 10 months of 2018 show significant declines from previous levels – except, interestingly, for higher denier count fibers, which showed a notable up-trend during the year.

During the six months from May through October 2018, monthly US imports for bicomponent PSF averaged about 5,600 tonnes, a decline of 17.4% from the period from January 2015 through April 2018. Regular fine-denier PSF, less than 3.0 denier, averaged 6,600 tonnes a month during the most recent six months, a drop of 31.6% from the longer-term average.
