Finnish transport workers keep strikes on hold for now

BRUSSELS, April 18, 2024-

Finnish automotive and transport workers will not restart political strikes for the moment and will continue discussions with the country’s government on its policies and what they consider a weakening of labor conditions.

The head of the Confederation of Finnish Trade Unions Jarkko Eloranta explained that the unions suspended their strikes 10 days ago in order to engage in discussions with the government. “Those discussions are ongoing,” he said, adding that there have been talks with the labor minister Arto Satonen dealing in particular with local agreements and the conditions for negotiating an export-led labor market model. “Our views are still far apart, but the discussions have taken place in a very positive spirit. SAK's board has reviewed the current situation and is not making any new decisions regarding labor market negotiations,” Eloranta said in a statement.
